Boxing's measuring punch. The lead hand goes out to read distance and steal a beat of vision, then comes straight back to the chin. Two versions here: the short jab as a feint, and the long jab thrown at full extension against a live defender.

Action

A straight punch off the lead hand. The elbow stays on the punching line, the fist snaps out of the guard and comes back along the same path — no wind-up, almost no hip turn, the rear hand never leaves the chin.

When to use

The measuring stick of boxing. It reads distance, occupies the opponent's vision, interrupts their rhythm and pulls the guard open for the hand behind it. Here it is a pure feint — the black fighter is not touched and her idle/taunt loop is left untouched.

Advantages

Shortest travel time of any punch, so it is the hardest to see and the easiest to recover from. Power is low by design: the value is in timing and placement, not impact. A jab that returns faster than it left is a good jab.

Limits

A jab that lands on a high guard spends your energy for nothing, and a dropped lead hand after it leaves the cross line open. Reach for it too often and you train the opponent to beat it. Measure first, then commit.
